Staithes is a charming fishing village on the NE coast approx 11 miles north of Whitby.  A number of small fishing boats still work from the harbour.  Staithes is traditional in  appearance having changed little over the years despite the increase in tourism.

Captain Cook spent time here as an apprentice in the late 18th century before moving to Whitby.

In the late 19th Century, the Staithes Artists (including Dame Laura Knight) painted here, up until the beginning of the First World War.

Staithes is now a haven for walkers and artists and caters well for holiday makers. It is a great place for children with rock pools to play in and fossils to hunt for.  There is a superb museum (Staithes Heritage Centre) which gives more information on the area, the links with Captain Cook and the Staithes Artists.  Other facilities include several public houses and cafes, a post office, gift shop and a small supermarket at the top of the bank.  There is a council owned car park at the top of the bank along with a supervised private car park (Glen Vale)
